"This weekend many New Yorkers across the state will join with family and friends to begin the holy month of Ramadan.
"Ramadan is a sacred time for reflection and gratitude, and to show compassion for those who are less fortunate. It is also an opportunity to remember our values of unity and tolerance, especially in the face of divisive rhetoric coming from Washington.
"In light of the repugnant violence recently inflicted on houses of worship here and abroad, out of an abundance of caution I am directing the State Police to increase its security presence at houses of worship around the state this weekend. We will take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety and security of New Yorkers and to defend the right to free religious expression.
"To those who observe, I wish you a blessed and peaceful Ramadan."
