WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ambassador Romualdez met with representatives of the Filipino American Legal Defense and Education Fund (FALDEF) to discuss critical issues and potential partnership on the provision of pro bono legal assistance to undocumented Filipino immigrants in the United States.
During the meeting, Ambassador Romualdez emphasized the Philippine government’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Filipino nationals, regardless of their immigration status. “We are exploring all possible avenues to provide legal support and resources to those who may be affected by these developments,” the Ambassador stated.
FALDEF representatives, led by FALDEF President Mr. Jose Teodoro Mallonga and accompanied by retired Ambassador and former Consul General in New York Mario De Leon, shared insights into the challenges faced by undocumented Filipinos, including access to legal counsel, and understanding of their rights and accessible resources. They outlined their ongoing efforts to offer pro bono legal services, organize community forums, and partner with other Filipino community groups to strengthen the support network for vulnerable populations.
Ambassador Romualdez concluded the meeting by assuring FALDEF that the Embassy’s doors remain open to all Filipinos, especially those with illegal status, seeking assistance.
In the spirit of bayanihan and for a Bagong Pilipinas, the Philippine Embassy calls on all stakeholders, including Filipino community organizations, legal experts, and advocates, to come as one in supporting the most vulnerable members of our community.
