WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Migrant Workers Office of the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. (MWO-WDC) has kicked off its workers education series for Filipino H-1B workers in the United States on 22 February 2025 through the conduct of Post-Arrival Orientation Seminar (PAOS) for teachers. H-1B workers are nonimmigrant professionals and skilled workers in specialty occupations in such fields as education, information technology, healthcare, finance, law, and accounting.
Eighty-eight (88) Filipino teachers from different parts of the United States attended the opening series, which focused on employee rights and obligations; recruitment regulations; relevant education laws covering safety and privacy of students; teaching protocols and useful tips for effective teaching; and programs and services of the MWO and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
Dr. Ingrid Jomento-Cruz of Prince George’s County Public Schools, Labor Attaché Saul De Vries and Welfare Officer Mae Codilla served as resource speakers. Mr. Jo Mari Rifareal moderated the event.
The MWO-WDC will conduct in-person and virtual workers education program throughout the year targeting teachers, medical technologists, and other H-1B professionals. The program intends to capacitate Filipino H-1B workers on labor rights, employment regulations, and effective integration into various US work systems. The upcoming virtual education sessions are scheduled on March 15 and August 9, 2025 for medical technologists, and on October 4, 2025 for teachers. The schedule and venues of in-person sessions will be posted on MWO-WDC social media accounts. Other categories of H-1B professionals who require labor education may contact the MWO-WDC through mwo_washingtondc@dmw.gov.ph.
